All That Glitters...

What do you do when you want to have a winter wonderland themed wedding and real flowers don't seem to fit in? Our client decided to go with paper flowers with lots of sparkle and shine, reminiscent of snow sparkling on a winter landscape. We made over 80 individual flowers to go in the reception table centerpieces. Some of those are pictured below.

We also made boutonnieres and corsages. We tried to keep the bouts clean and simple with not too much sparkle as to not scare off the guys from wanting to even put them on. :) Our client requested the music note ones for the musicians to wear. :)

The corsages on the other hand...These were encrusted with glitter. Each flower was sprayed with adhesive and dusted with iridescent glitter. Liquid silver glitter glue lined the edges. And as a final touch, gems were added to the centers.

Our client provided us with glittered snowflakes and antique silver cones in various shapes and sizes for the bridesmaid bouquets. We added glittered paper flower petals and white feathers to make the wintery bouquets.

Awesome clients with a very unique wedding and we are so grateful for the opportunity to design their flowers! If you are friends with me on facebook, you'll know that toward the end of the order I felt like my person and everything I owned had been covered with glitter and feathers! But in the end, I won the epic battle with glitter and from what I hear, my client had a gorgeous wedding. If I get any pics from the wedding, I will post soon!

2013 is here! We are so excited for all of the new beginnings and possibilities this year holds. Some of them are coming up right away! We will be doing two demonstrations at the "Scrappin' & Pinnin' For the Cure" retreat this weekend. We will do a demonstration on making tissue poms on Saturday morning at 10:30am at the 4-H Building, and one on mini treat/pocket tags on Sunday afternoon at 3:00pm. Instead of our usual DIY project, this month we are having a contest to win this Valentine's Day kit! The drawing will be held on January 31st and there are a few different ways to enter your name. Little Gentleman

I had a lot fun making two custom banners recently. The customer has a little boy that just turned one and had decided on a vintage themed birthday party, even encouraging attendees to wear vintage attire. What a cute idea! She wanted a small banner that said "One" for his high chair and a larger banner to decorate with. I had the perfect paper from Graphic 45's "A Proper Gentleman" collection. I made origami ties for the high chair banner and cut out letters using "Fontopia" cricut cartridge. Then I cut wide triangles for the larger bunting banner. So fun to get to make decorations for her little gentleman!

Our DIY this month is a leaf garland, perfect for a Thanksgiving decoration. We’ve had a few people ask about how to make the leaf garland we had in the store last year, so I thought I’d share where we got the idea. Last year we did it out of paper, this year burlap, but what gave us the idea is this felt one from the “A Beautiful Mess” blog. Basically we just cut leaf shapes out by hand from paper in fall colors (and burlap this year), got a big needle to thread the yarn through and used multicolored rainbow yarn to stitch through each leaf by hand. We had about three stitches in each leaf. Our leaves were a little “fatter” than the ones on the blog and our garland was longer. I think we used two Basic Grey papers and two FancyPantsDesigns papers that we still carry in the shop.

I love all of the painted pumpkins I been seeing this year, pinned a few on my pumpkin board on Pinterest, and decided to make a few of my own.

So simple and you can do so many things. I decided to go with bright and funky. I just used acrylic paint and a brush. I taped off the chevron lines on the larger pumpkin. Then I sprayed them all with Polyurethane when I was finished so that the paint wouldn’t scratch off easily and to help the pumpkins last longer. Simple, fun, and a lot less messy than carvingJ.

Lazy Susan

Thought I'd share with you a project that I've been working on for quite a while that I just finished. The wood lazy susan was handmade by my brother for me to woodburn and paint. I love starting with a blank slate of wood that I can put whatever I want onto! I learned how to woodburn about ten years ago, and it definitely took a while to get the hang of. You would think that it would be similar to holding a pencil or brush, but you actually have to move your hand quite differently and it takes a while to learn how to get smooth lines, especially the ones that are curvy. For this lazy susan, I decided to draw flowers in the center that I remember seeing in my mother's garden. 

In this photo you can (barely) see the pencil lines of my drawing and I have a little of the woodburning done.

Next I stained it with water-based oak and walnut stain, mixing a metallic gold glaze in with the oak. I wish I had took a picture of it like that because I considered leaving it that way. It really shows the detail of the woodburning more than when its painted. I'm kind of thinking that if I do another one this detailed I will just stain it and leave it. Anyway, I decided to paint this one because I kept envisioning all of mom's pretty flowers in color. Here is another photo of the finished product.
